Veliko Tarnovo is located in the centre of Bulgaria and is the medieval capital. The main area of interest is the old town part, which features picturesque houses which appear to cling to the side of the hillside. Probably the best example of the old town is Gurko street which features cobbled flagstones and black and white traditional bulgarian houses. At present there is no local airport open to travellers, therefore the best way to arrive from Sofia, Bourgas or Varna airports is by coach. From Sofia in November 2010 the cost was 18 Leva each way.
