The Church of the Forty Martyrs, Veliko Tarnovo

The Church of the Forty Martyrs (Tsarkva na chetirideset machenitsi) is located near the bridge in Veliko Tarnovo.

The church was founded by Tsar Ivan Asen II as a commemoration of his victory on Forty Martyrs day in 1230 against the Byzantine rulers of Epirus at Klokotnitsa.

Since it's construction the church has been subject to extensive alteration over the years.

The church is the burial location of Saint Sava, who was the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Also buried at the site are several Bulgarian Tsars.
